St Cross Symondians will top the Southern Premier League Cup West table if they win their final match at New Milton on Saturday and, less than a mile down the road, Bashley (Rydal) beat Bournemouth, the current leaders.
The Winchester club are two points behind Bournemouth after a comfortable 94-run win over lowly Lymington at the Green Jackets ground.
Their 184-9, fueled by a half-century by the in-form Harry Trussler (left), was far too many for run shy Lymington, who rolled over for 90 in the 32nd over.
St Cross didn’t enjoy the best of starts with Hampshire’s Harry Came, who had played in the second team’s East Division win over Alton the previous week, caught behind off the evergreen Ed Freeman (2-26), the first of three victims for the stylish Gareth Schreuder behind the stumps.
Tom Foyle scored 27 of the next 40 runs St Cross scored before feathering a second catch to the South African gloveman.
Fresh from his century against Andover a fortnight earlier, Trussler took charge, patiently accumulating 58 and doubling the score in a handy partnership with Blair Brown.
Trussler’s departure at 126 prompted a middle-order wobble with five wickets falling for 32 runs – lanky teenage off-spinner Dan Bailey pouching 3-28 – to leave St Cross an uncertain 158-8. But the last two wickets added 26 runs, leaving the hosts with a competitive 184-9 on the board.
Lymington’s young side has struggled for runs in most of the league cup matches – only Terry Crabb has made a fifty - and from 32-4 there was no way back for a side that had eight players under 21 years of age in its ranks. The scraped together 90, South African Cameron Braans (3-14) creating middle-order inroads before Came (2-0) came on to take the last two wickets.
