Sway’s cricketers cemented their early season top spot in Southern Premier Division 3 with a comfortable six-wicket win over Havant seconds at Jubilee Fields. With Gosport Borough and Parley both suffering reverses, Sway are 27 points ahead.
Havant begin with a promising 50 run partnership, until mid-off Richard Thomas caught Andrew Galliers (24) off Jon Waller and then smartly ran out Julian Atkins (22). Thereafter, the visitors’ batting proved to be frail, the pace of Hugh Bernard (3-23) wrecking the middle order.
The procession continued, with the exception of 16-year-old Matty Hayward’s undefeated 30. Havant were dismissed for 144. Dave Steadman 2-29, Jon Waller 2-39, Jon Grasham 1-29 and Thomas 1-21 shared the spoils.
Alex Hall (33) and Steadman 28* shared in a 49-run fourth wicket pairing for Sway which largely settled the match: Tim Noble (15), John Walter (17) and Will Crossley (15) had all hit impressive boundaries before departing. There was just time for Bernard to finish things off with a typical straight six.
Bashley (Rydal) lost their last six wickets for 35 runs but successfully defended 221 - Arno Hattingh (51) and Ryan Taylor (40) top scoring - to beat Paultons by seven runs.
Peter Lamb took 6-34 for Paultons who looked a good bet after Paul Longland (70), Robbie Pike (39) and Callum Barton (25) had propelled them to 131-2 - but they too collapsed, six wickets tumbling for 31 runs, three of them to Phil Morris.
Parley came a cropper at Holbury, where Fawley's 279-6 (Sufian Munir 62) benefitted from 40 extras - a signficant statistic in an 11-run defeat. Tom Jacques (47) and Bo Powell, with a breezy 31 late on, ran Parley close.
Trojans recovered from a top order collapse - they fell from 76-2 (Ed Boyd 37) to 80-5 - with South African Quinton Venter (28) and Steff Rowlands (29) rallying after Mohammed Ali (5-32) threatened a knockout blow.
But Gosport, chasing 166, responded poorly after a 60-run start by Lee Harrop (49) and Aussie Oli Lunt (23), with Luke Dimmick (4-10) cutting through their middle-order. Borough, away to Sway on Saturday, were dismissed for 138.
