Former Hampshire batsman Jason Laney and Steven Hirst shared a 118-run opening partnership to set up a seven-wicket win for St Cross Symondians seconds over Winchester neighbours Sparsholt at the Green Jackets.
St Cross chased down Sparsholt’s 210-5 with six overs to spare. It was their second win in the Southern Premier League Cup East group, which puts them one point behind the Hampshire Academy in the embryo table.
Laney [left] hit an accomplished 62 and Hirst 54, the pair each being dismissed by Tom Foster (2-33) within five runs of each other at 118 and 123.
But Sparsholt were unable to break the subsequent stand of 72 between Matt Swann (35) and Matt Howarth (40) which eased St Cross to a comfortable win.
Earlier, Josh May (46) and Foster (51) produced a productive second-wicket stand for Sparsholt, for whom Lewis Mitchard subsequently hit 54 not out. It was Sparsholt’s second defeat.
