Totton & Eling, barely out of the top two all season, could miss out on a British Gas Southern League Division 2 promotion ticket if their losing run continues.
Hartley Wintney have moved right into the promotion shake-up after they completed the double over former the leaders after an astonishing turnaround at Southern Gardens..
The village side are now just one point behind Totton (now second) and within shooting range of new leaders OTs and Romsey, who they entertain in their final match on September 2.
A Hartley Wintney victory looked virtually out of the question when a superb spell by James Taylor (4-18) reduced them to 97-8, but James Beckwith, pictured by Dave Vokes, emerged from the pavilion at nine to score 67 and hoist the visitors total to 170.
At 65-2, Totton were on course, with Dan Clouting (28) and Mark Mbofana (36) going nicely.
Tight spells from Scott Baldwin (1-31) and Henry Collier (0-16 off ten) tightened the screw, but Kieran Geyle (33) kept Totton afloat.
But the innings caved in against the young Waddington brothers, Ollie taking 4-36 and Seb 2-10 as Totton collapsed from 101-3 to 164 all out – and a third successive defeat, by six runs.
The result enabled Old Tauntonians & Romsey, 29-run winners over South Wilts II, to climb into top spot – with a mere six points separating the top three with two matches to play.
Runs and boundaries were at a premium on a soulless Romsey Sports Centre pitch, devoid of pace or bounce, with the ball crossing the boundary rope on 13 times all game.
OTs owed much to Stu Shapland (28) for their eventual 132 (Tom Pearce 4-37) – a total way beyond South Wilts, who collapsed to 36-5 (Joe Vaughan 3-15) before launching a partial middle-order recovery.
Pearce (24) and Stephen Booth (21) rallied before Steve Smith (4-25) ended the resistance at 102 all out.
Mike Haworth hit a season’s best 75 not out as Sparsholt romped to a seven-wicket win over Winchester rivals St Cross Symondians II at Locks Lane.
The teenager hit 11 fours in his knock and enjoyed a match winning century stand with David Banks (55) as Sparsholt chased down 190-7 with six overs to spare.
Earlier, Dan Young (54) and Harry Foyle (44) enjoyed a hundred partnership of their own for St Cross, while Haworth took 2-36 to complete a fine day.
