Abhay Gonella’s second consecutive fifty-plus score, conveniently against the county’s Academy side, has earned the Guildford Royal Grammar School batsman a call-up for tomorrow’s (Wednesday) Second XI T20 double header for Hampshire against Surrey at the LSE Sports Ground, New Malden, 11.30.
He top scored with 81 as Alton pulled off a 29-run win at Newclose – a significant result bearing in mind all three bottom teams in the ECB Southern Premier Division all won their round 12 matches.
The 40-overs per side match, delayed until after lunch to enable ground staff to mop up after heavy overnight rain, produced 475 runs, with Alton successfully defending 252-8.
The Brewers had lost Ryan Covey and Dan Harris in quick succession (22-2) when Gonella arrived at the crease to share a century stand with Scott Myers (44) which underpinned the Alton total. He was eventually fourth out for 81 at 196-4 (eight fours), after which Matt Bacon smashed three sixes in a quick fire 39. Teenager Harry Petrie took 3-58 on Academy debut.
Scott Currie (42), James Regan (39) and Tom Prest (30) responded for the Academy, who were dismissed for 223, Jack Myers taking 3-51.
