Rivals for promotion from Southern Premier Division 3, Langley Manor took over Sway’s second spot in the table following a fluctuating 16 run win at Jubilee Fields.
Put into bat, Langley started briskly until Hugh Barnard had Budd brothers Jack (26) and Will dismissed in the space of three balls. Skipper Connor Browne (23) continued patiently, joined by James Purcell who contributed an invaluable 37.
It was the Langley tail, assisted by an appalling flurry of wides, which pushed up the visitors’ total to 228-9. Todd Garner 48, Tom Spencer 26 and Simon Peters 18 all benefitted from some variable home bowling. Nevertheless, John Grasham’s left arm seam claimed 3-37.
Losing early wickets, Sway’s response was disappointingly familiar, Will Crossley and Jon Grasham gone at 12-2. An outstanding partnership of 143 for the 3rd wicket followed between the ever- patient Tim Noble (81) and a free scoring Alex Hall (69): each scored 11 impressive boundaries.
With Sway seemingly on course for victory, fortunes turned sharply when Hall was bowled by Elliot Ponting and Bernard departed first ball. Wickets began to tumble and when Noble was yorked by Jamie Piper, Sway struggled to stay in touch.
Thereafter, only Greg Jones (14) reached double figures and when a victim to a fine running mid wicket boundary little Tommy Spencer catch, the home side was left stranded on 212 all out. Determined seamers Ponting (5-40) and Piper (3-49) ran through an increasingly nervous Sway late order. Graham Symons.
