South Wilts' seconds pulled off a remarkable 91-run win at Hambledon, having lost half their wickets with only 44 runs on the board and been in even deeper trouble at 75-7.
Rhidian Chapman (3-23) and Australian Sam Beagley (3-49) plunged South Wilts into deep trouble – but neither could shift Tom Pearce (above, pictured by Roy Honeybone) who proceeded to turn the innings – and the course of the match – on its head.
The past second team captain struck an 11-boundary 90 and with down the order support from Ben Fisher (14) and James Wade (16) steered South Wilts to 195 – the last three wickets yielding 120 runs.
Wade then struck a mortal blow by running Hambledon captain Will Bond out without facing, after which is was all downhill for the historic village side as they tumbled to 104 all out.
Wade (2-14) had a hand in the first three Hambledon wickets to fall before the teenage Fisher (4-14) ran through the lower order.
The win cemented South Wilts into a healthy mid-table spot ahead of Saturday’s demanding visit to Purbrook.
