Tom Scriven struck a magnificent 288 – the highest individual score ever made in Hampshire youth cricket – before the county Under-17s were held to a high scoring draw by Devon in their final ECB County Championship match at picturesque Sandford.
His double-century enabled Hampshire to post a powerful 458 after Devon, who batted throughout the third day to make 469-6, having made 252-8 declared on the opening day.
Scriven, pictured by Elsa Morris bringing up his 200, batted all bar one over of the Hampshire innings, coming to the crease after Devon had captured the wickets of Marlborough College pair Elijah Samuel and Billy Mead with only two runs on the board.
He used his time at the crease to perfection, reaching 112 by the end of the first day and taking his score on to 288 to become only the second Hampshire youth player to make a double century behind Havant’s Robert Gibson. Lymington all-rounder Felix Organ made a double century at Under-15 level.
Fletcha Middleton and Bashley (Rydal) spin all-rounder Patrick Holly made support fifties.
Spotted by Hampshire making a welter of runs in junior cricket for his native Berkshire, Scriven hit one six and 34 fours, mainly from front-foot drives.
Ironically, he was last man out for Hampshire – caught on the long-off boundary trying to loft a Devon spinner for six !
It was Scriven’s second century in the ECB Under-17 County Championship, the Magdalen College talent having made 138 in the recent loss to Somerset at Basingstoke. He has also made three 50-plus scores.
He previously underlined his bowling prowess with a five-wicket haul for the Hampshire Academy, who sprung a shock win over Premier League champions South Wilts a fortnight ago.
