Matt Taylor hit a second unbeaten half-century in consecutive days as Calmore Sports eased through to Sunday’s Voneus Village Cup county final against Sparsholt with a comfortable seven-wicket win over Sarisbury Athletic at Allotment Road.
Taylor, left, was already in good nick having made 55 not out for Calmore seconds’ at Verwood the previous day so anchoring the innings as the visitors chased down Sarisbury’s 149 all out wasn’t terribly testing.
Calmore bowled well during the afternoon session with Mark Lavelle, James Manning and Ben Perry all taking three wickets. Ricky Rawlins (29) and Josh King top scored for SA, while Max Bailey picked up three stumpings.
Calmore lost Ben Johns to a brilliant Elliott Smith catch at short mid-wicket before the bearded left-hander had got off the mark, but Hampshire media king Will Brewster (25) treated the crowd to one or two eye catching shots while Taylor dug in.
Taylor earlier showed off his goalkeeping prowess in front of pavilion, but redeemed himself with his half-century. Shawn Johnson, hero of the previous round’s thrilling win at Paultons, hit a fiery 38 before Taylor and Manning completed the formalities.
While Sparsholt were rattling up a mighty 281-8 (Josh May 89) against Bramshaw, 2018 Lord’s finalists Liphook & Ripsley crashed out at emerging Sussex League Division 3 club West Chiltington & Thakenham, who totalled a match winning 238-9 after being 105-5 at one stage.
Expensive close season signing Joe Randall took 5-39, but any real prospect Liphook had of progressing to the county final sank at 33-4. Grant Rouse (32) and George Neave (61) rallied, but Liphook fell well short at 196-9.
Redlynch & Hale were rushed out for 37 by Burbage & Easton Royals, who play Goatacre in the Wiltshire county final.
