Local cricket has been terribly saddened by news of the death on Thursday evening of Fareham & Crofton and Hampshire Cricket League stalwart Tony 'Bomber' Brown, aged 82, after an incredibly brave battle against PC.
During and long after his retirement from the Royal Navy, Tony devoted a large chunk of his life to cricket, spending countless hours at Bath Lane playing as an off-spin all-rounder and, after hanging up his boots, tending to the two squares at the ground. He also enjoyed a jar or two and, appropriately, the bar in F & C's new clubhouse is named in his honour.
He served the HCL with equal distinction, running the winter quiz for many years and serving on its committee as vice-chairman. He drive many miles and spent numerous hours helping numerous clubs improve their grounds and pitches. Three years ago he was named Fareham's Citizen of the Year.
A full tribute will appear after the weekend.
