Totton & Eling are skating on thin ice at the ECB Southern Premier Division basement after losing by 83 runs to a Josh Digby inspired Bashley (Rydal) at Southern Gardens.
With three matches remaining, they enjoy a 27-point cushion over Hook & Newnham Basics, but those last games – against South Wilts, the Hampshire Academy and at Havant - are demanding.
Captain Digby, with a half-century and a four-wicket return, led from the front as Bashley hauled themselves out of early trouble at 26-3, Cambridge University seamer Sam Beer (2-30) striking twice.
Michael Porter (44) initiated the Bashley recovery adding 35 with Saif Achakzai (19) before becoming a second victim for former Berkshire all-rounder Harry Stephens (2-41) at 101-5.
Bashley’s match winning stand involved Digby (50) and Patrick Lewis (47), who almost doubled the total before Bothwell Chapungu (4-39) spun the last five wickets out for 34 to leave the visitors’ 228 all out.
Chapungu got Totton’s reply off to after, blistering 27 of 15 balls, including six boundaries. He sensibly decreed it was far too hot to run !
Opening partner Conor Griffiths (29) was made a steadier stuff, but once he became a Digby victim, Totton relied on Cornishman Archie Pascoe (27) and the long handle of Tom Varney (25) to get them to 145 all out. Tom Penycate and James Trodd shared four cheap wickets.
