Totton & Eling have regained the Southern Premier Division 1 leadership from near neighbours Calmore Sports after a five-wicket win over Portsmouth at St Helen’s, Southsea.
The match turned dramatically in mid-afternoon when Portsmouth crashed from 117-2 to 147 all out – eight wickets falling for 30 runs, four of them to teenage left-arm spinner Toby Green (4-31).
The city side was going nicely through Ben Duggan (54) and Jack Marston (33), but fell apart at the sight of spin.
Brighton Mugochi (2-24) triggered the collapse by dismissing Marston and Joe Kooner-Evans inside three balls.
Almost immediately, Green had Duggan stumped by Oli Thomas and Portsmouth fell apart.
A half-century by Harrison Clarke (52) underpinned Totton’s run chase, the opener sharing a key partnership with Owen Morris (40) as the visitors cruised home.
Overnight leaders Calmore Sports had their scheduled home match with Sarisbury Athletic washed out by heavy overnight rain, which also claimed Andover v Rowledge and the long awaited return of Jeremy Frith to Sparsholt, whose visit to Basingstoke & North Hants was also cancelled in mid-afternoon. But he did pick up some handy air miles ...
South African spin all-rounder Harlan Greig took 5-16 and George Watts 3-8 as New Milton maintained their promotion push with a six-wicket win over St Cross Symondians II, who are anchored to the foot of the table.
Watts broke the ice by trapping Steve Hirst leg before, after which Greig, from the powerful Claremont club in Cape Town, took five wickets from one end to leave St Cross reeling at 42-6. Dylan Clarke hit an unbeaten 37 late on to lift their total to 92 all out.
Greig didn't last long with the bat as NM wobbled at 10-2, but bridegroom-to-be Ryan Beck made an unbeaten 37 and Toby Edwards flayed a quick-fire 34 (three sixes) to eased the Green & Golds home.
