Hampshire Under-16 all-rounder prospect Tommy Cheater (above) celebrated his maiden Southern Premier Division 1 half-century as Totton & Eling regained top spot with a close seven-run victory over lowly St Cross Symondians II at Southern Gardens.
He arrived at the crease as Totton dropped from 78-2 (Harrison Clarke 25) to 103-7, but went for his shots regardless, hitting four sixes and four boundaries in his quick-fire 53, while Sam Bracey (20) played an effective support role. A 4-21 spell by Cameron Braans caused Totton problems.
Ben Foster (33) and Paul Hawkins (35) steered St Cross to 101-2 in the rain cut 35-over affair, but when Cheater had the Hawkeye supremo caught behind the visitors lost direction and they finished 167-9, seven runs adrift of Totton's 174-8, Brighton Mugochi taking 3-23.
The win left Totton & Eling two points ahead of near neighbours Calmore Sports, whose scheduled home match against Sparsholt was cancelled after heavy overnight rain.
