Fair Oak skipper Charlie Gwynn got a taste of what it's like to be a county cricketer on Wednesday when he played for Oxford UCCE in the opening pre-season friendly against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Things went well at first with the Outlaws losing their first three wickets for 40, but it proved a day of toil in the field for the students after that with Ben Slater, Ben Compton and Steven Mullaney all scoring unbeaten hundreds and Notts closing at 410-4 declared.
Gwynn was not invited to bowl his left-arm spin, but got an opportunity to bat later in the Oxford innings after Hampshire 2nd XI spin all-rounder Calvin Harrison had made 121. Gwynn made a handy 33 before being bowled by Peter Trego as Oxford closed at 291-9. The match was eventually abandoned.
Meanwhile at Kidderminster, South African all-rounder Michael Booth celebrated his Durham UCCE debut with a 3-16 return as Worcestershire were rattled out for 150. The former Hilton College student is in his fresher year at Durham and has been linked with a local Southern Premier League club when his summer term ends. He later made 12 of Durham's 92 all out on a seamer friendly Chester Street surface.
