VENTNOR pair Steve Snell and Ross Whyte each hit 100 to take the gloss off a superb one-man show by Sparsholt teenager Oli Williams, who took three of the islanders' wickets after earlier hitting 95 at the Norman Edwards Ground.
Ventnor won the Southern Premier Division 1 match by six wickets, possibly with a wry smile or two having earlier seen Shanklin-raised Tim Simmonite dismissed under Law 37: Obstructing the Field !
Sparsholt teenager Oli Williams, chosen for Hampshire U15s in midweek, struck a best yet 95 only to be dismissed within touching distance of a maiden Southern Premier League century.
Hitting 13 boundaries, Williams underpinned Sparsholt’s 241 before being bowled, eighth wicket down, by Ventnor’s Hugh Calloway just five runs short of his hundred.
Williams featured in several useful stands as Sparsholt made their way to 241, initially 78 with Josh May (32), the n Callum Doran (34) and finally 45 with Jeremy Frith (24).
His impact on the game didn’t end there as Williams prompted took 3-17, including Sri Lankan ace Dineth Thimodya, as Ventnor creaked at 65-3.
Alas, that was as good as it got for Williams and Sparsholt as Snell, whose grandfather Jim played for club in the old days, and Whyte began peppering the boundary.
Whyte hit three sixes and 14 fours, while 72 of Snell’s 100 came in fours. They added 172.
But what happened with Tim Simmonite, the HCB man. How did he get out ?
