It took Bashley (Rydal) 23.1 overs to bowl Trojans out for 57 and 71 legitimate balls to polish off the target – their six-wicket win consolidating a four-point lead over Fair Oak in the two-horse leadership race in Southern Premier League Cup West 2/3.
Only Mark Atkins (18) and Nigel le Bas (13) managed to notch double figures as Ted Bracey (2-11) broke through before Trojans lost three more cheap wickets in dropping to 33-5 on a wet surface following heavy rain. Fourteen-year old leggie Ethan Baker took 3-3 as Trojans lost their last five wickets for eight runs, Saif Achakzai and Simon Watkins bagging two each.
Bashley’s reply began in calamitous fashion with a careless Louis Pritchard run out. Two Jamie Donaldson (2-19) strikes later, the visitors were 16-3, but Patrick Lewis picked off anything loose to relieve any anxieties. He went on to make an unbeaten 30 and with Trojans tossing in a dozen wides, Bashley were soon on their way home.
A win in their last game against South Wilts II at the BCG on Saturday should more or less ensure top place for the young Bashley side (exc Neil Taylor/Simon Watkins). Fair Oak visit Langley Manor and Hythe & Dibden.
