BASINGSTOKE and North Hants seconds gave Southern League Division Two leaders Totton and Eling, a massive Southern Gardens fright before losing by three wickets.
They were bowled out for 97 and had Totton rocking at 47-7 before Oliver Thomas (24) and Brighton Mugochi (28) turned the match on its head with an unbroken partnership which maintained their side’s unbeaten start to the season.
Greg Donaldson opened the Basingstoke innings in an explosive manner with 13 in 10 balls, hitting three fours. However, his departure signalled a top order collapse as the visitors were soon 22-4.
Joshua Coombs (29) and Chris Froud (7) got the score past 50, but they then slumped to 67-9 before Matt Deadman, with a defiant unbeaten 30, and last man Keith Harris (5) so nearly got the home side into three figures.
Totton found it really tough going against Basingstoke’s experienced seam and spin attack of Chris Chandler (2-10) and Keith Harris (4-32), who reduced them to 44-6. Chandler then took a catch to give Greg Donaldson a wicket as it became 47-7.
That was as good as it got for Basingstoke as Brighton Mugochi and Thomas, who is following in Jim Hacker’s footsteps at the LSE, put on an unbeaten 48 to get Totton home.
Second placed St Cross Symondians II trimmed run shy Fair Oak (143) by five wickets, Jamie Cork taking 4-31 before Jason Laney (46), Matt Haworth (33) and Ben Adams (29) scored the runs to secure victory.
Spin duo Scott Dawes (3-6) and Andrew Denney (3-23) shared six of the wickets as Paultons easily accounted for Liphook & Ripsley (117). George Condon made 46 not out in Paultons’ seven-wicket win.
South Wilts II and Langley Manor swapped places at the bottom of SPL2 after the Bemerton visitors won by four wickets at Knellers Lane.
Jack Budd (57) top scored in the Manor’s modest 173, a total South Wilts polished off, with teenager Jack Stearman jolting first team selectors with an unbeaten 42. Stephen Booth made 30 while Rob Pittman added 27 runs to his 3-34 return.
