Several aspiring young cricketers from the locally based ECB Southern Electric Premier League got an opportunity to test their skills playing for their respective MCCU sides against county opposition in the opening round of pre-season friendly matches in late March 2015.
Hampshire Academy seam bowling all-rounder Jack Wood probably had the biggest smile on his face after dismissing Somerset’s former England left-hand opener arcus Trescothick in a two-wicket opening new-ball spell for Durham at Taunton. Wood, who bowled fellow opener Tom Abell for a duck, returned creditable figures of 2-32 in the overs, before Johann Myburgh (who had an unsuccessful spell with Hampshire in 2011) made 150 and James Hildreth 107 to lift Somerset to 354-3. Havant’s Robert Gibson made five opening the batting for Durham, who forced a draw at 129-7.
Bashley (Rydal) batsman Luke Webb (40) top scored in Oxford’s first innings score of 124 all out against Worcester, who set themselves up for an innings victory by osting 339-6 in reply. Lymington wicketkeeper Ed Ellis snapped up two victims behind the stumps before Oxford, batting again, were wiped out for 95.
Ventnor opener Jake George captained Cardiff MCCU, whose bowlers were flayed around the SWALEC Stadium by Glamorgan, for whom one-time Bournemouth batsman Chris Cooke made an unbeaten 112. George made eight as the students mustered 110-8 in reply to draw a rain-affected match.
