Joe Vaughan [left] hit a season’s best 88 not out to steer Old Tauntonians & Romsey to a six-wicket win over visiting Southern Premier Division 2 rivals Hartley Wintney at the Romsey Sports Centre.
He struck eight boundaries in a patient 131-ball knock at the top of the order as OTs chased down 179-8 with nine overs to spare.
A miserly ten over spell by left-arm slow bowler Matt Bampton, who conceded only eight runs, put Hartley on the back foot and from 11-2 they were never in a position to dictate terms.
Hugo Hammond (35) and Lachlan Roughley (22) were made to work for their runs, Vaughan too impressive with his spin.
It was left to Tom Nightingale, with an unbeaten 45, to raise the HW score to 179-8.
Vaughan then paced his unbeaten 88 to perfection, adding 50 with Harry Tulk (29) as OTs cruised to a third win in four ahead of Saturday’s visit to table topping St Cross Symondians II.
Hampshire's Jack Campbell (57) and Jack Budd (54) hit half-centuries to set up a handsome 106-run victory for Langley Manor over winless Liphook & Ripsley, who were dismissed for 152. The Manor made 258-7.
Fair Oak and St Cross Symondians II served up a Lapstone Park thriller, the Winchester men clinging on to win by three runs in a tense finish.
Former Hampshire cricketer Jason Laney (40), paired with former Brondesbury captain James Overy (39), gave St Cross a solid start with an opening stand of 91 before both fell to youthful left-arm twirler Lewis Goodyear (2-32). That was matched by fellow spinner Rhys Oxley, the experienced Oaks skipper claiming 2 for 38. But the visitors put on useful late runs through Michael Haworth (33*) and Simon Beetham (24) to finish on a highly competitive 203-6.
Cameron Braans then took centre stage, the St Cross bowler taking 3-26 to play a key role in reducing Oaks to 61-6. At that stage the hosts appeared to be out of it, but under-17 Tom Clark compiled a steady 32 in a stand of 92 with Gregor McKenzie, whose typically aggressive 63 occupied a mere 57 balls.
Both were dismissed by Ben Foster (3-45), but Oaks rallied again through Oxley and James Gradwell. They made 17 apiece in a ninth-wicket stand of 37 to take their side to a tantalising 197-8. Beetham had the last word, though, taking the last two wickets to leave Fair Oak 200 all out off the last ball of the 49th over.
Alex Shephard caught the eye with ball and bat as Waterlooville trimmed Sparsholt by six wickets at Rowlands Avenue, where the visitors fell to 141 all out (Tom Berzins 46). Shephard took 3-26 and later hit 27 not out, Josh McCoy having early made an identical score.
