Hook & Newnham Basics will be looking to avenge last weekend’s four-wicket Southern Premier Division 1 defeat when they entertain Ventnor in the Hampshire County final of the National Village Cup at the King George V Ground on Sunday, 1pm.
Ventnor chased down Hook’s 277-8 – left-hander Harry Robson [left] hitting a century only to be upstaged by Sri Lankan Dineth Thimodya, whose 146 carried the islanders home with time to spare.
The Colombo left-hand all-rounder isn’t eligible to play in the Village Cup, so that will come as some relief to Hook, who have never been in the county final before.
Robson held the Hook innings together as wickets tumbled all around him. He struck a six and 13 fours, facing 144 balls before being ninth man out at 260.
Sam Lockwood (20) and later Rupes Armstrong (23) played useful support roles before Jack Murrell upped the ante with a quick fire 39, which contained a six and five fours.
Ventnor, who have reached the village cup county final on the back of three walkovers, came flying out of the blocks, with Thimodya and Tom Friend (fresh from scoring an unbeaten 156 against Calmore Sports the previous week) pinging sixes and fours around the KGV almost at will.
The Sri Lankan had 50 when Friend (34) was caught behind of Murrell. Henry Bartlett followed two balls later.
Any uncertainties Ventnor had at 116-3 disappeared when teenager Sam Mills (47) put on 125 with Thimodya. The Sri Lankan eventually fell to a return catch by Charlie Neville, his 147 containing five maximums and 16 fours. His knock won the game with six overs to spare.
