Hambledon stormed into the national Village Cup county semi-finals with a massive 210-run victory over Hampshire League Division 3 North club Oakley at Ridge Meadow.
They posted a towering 257-4 off 40 overs before skittling Oakley for a paltry 47, 16-year old Ben Reilly taking five of the first six wickets to fall.
It was a far cry from the previous round when Hambledon scrambled past Hursley Park by one wicket, courtesy of a boundary overthrow off the penultimate ball of the match.
Hambledon took control with an 84-run opening stand between the Marshall brothers, James (50) and George (43), and went on to totally dominate proceedings.
Henry Glanfield was nailed by a Josh Carpenter straight one, but Spencer leClercq hit an unbeaten 88 and Oscar Mann 32 not out, only 26 runs from their unbroken 101 sixth-wicket stand coming in boundaries.
Oakley were blown away inside 18 overs – only two batsmen making double figures – as Reilly produced a Dons best 5-18 and 16-year old Oli Bembridge (3-4) took three of the last four wickets.
Easton & Martyr Worthy gave Hook & Newnham Basics a run for their money before conceding a three-wicket defeat at the King George V ground.
They sank to 39-4, but rallied through Seb Stannard (31), Neil Rose (26) and Jordan Banks (28) to post 137-7.
Banks then took 3-32 to have Hook wobbling, but Dan Moore’s key 44 proved pivotal as the hosts recovered, but at 102-6 and later 117-7 (Oscar Hunwick 3-25) the Premier Division 1 club weren’t out of the woods.
But Ollie Webster struck an unbeaten 21 to guide Hook to victory without further loss.
The continual wet weather had a predictable impact on the local second round ties, with Sway’s home match with Ventnor washed out, as was Sarisbury Athletic’s game with Overton, and Rowledge at Valley End. The venues will be reversed this coming Sunday, May 14.
