Competition debutants Hook & Newnham Basics powered through to round two of the National Village Cup with a comprehensive eight-wicket win at Sway – the contest effectively being all over bar the proverbial shouting after Liam Shore’s blistering new-ball burst.
The lean and lanky left-armer knocked over Sway’s top three batsmen and finished with figures of 4-16 before Sway recovered from a desperate 22-5 to post 144, largely on the back of a century partnership between Dave Steadman (49) and Jon Gresham (41).
Half-centuries by Richie Wilcock (60) and Harry Warner (53 not out) eased Hook into a second round visit to Paultons on Sunday, 1pm.
Sunday’s local second round ties include: Amport v Sparsholt, Frensham v Rowledge, Lacock v Redlynch & Hale, Liphook & Ripsley v Hursley Park, Paultons v Hook & Newnham Basics, Parley v Cattistock, Sarisbury Athletic v Bramshaw.
