The country’s two highest individual run scorers in this season’s Voneus Village Cup face off when Bramshaw host holders Calmore Sports in tomorrow's (Sunday) Hampshire county final.
Tom Arnold, in the best form of his career, has hit 264 runs in Bramshaw’s three wins, while Ben Johns, the hero of last season’s cup final win at Lord’s, has 214 to his credit.
Captain Arnold, it seems, just cannot stop scoring runs. He’s made scores of 82 (Paultons), 111* (Easton & Martyr Worthy) and 74 (Sparsholt) in the Village Cup
That’s alongside 198 in Bramshaw’s opening four Hampshire League matches, including 99 when his side chased down Parley’s hefty 335-7 to win by four wickets with eight balls to spare last week.
Johns has developed a special affinity with the Village Cup. His batting was largely instrumental in Calmore reaching Lord’s last season, with key innings against Goatacre, Rockhampton and Stoke Green before being crowned Man of the Match for his 58 not out against Alvanley in the final.
The chunky left-hander has continued to accumulate runs in this season’s Village Cup, with half-centuries in Calmore’s wins over Hambledon and Sarisbury Athletic ahead of an unbeaten century in the eight-wicket win at Ventnor. Just for good measure, Johns made 81* in the SPL T20 against Portsmouth & Southsea last Sunday.
Bramshaw and Calmore Sports name full strength sides for Sunday’s final. Admission is free, with ample car parking alongside the B3078 Fordingbridge road.
Bramshaw: Jack Booth, Tom Arnold, Simon Booth, Charlie Anderson, Dan Eckton, Zane D’Monte, Michael Kingston, Joe Coombs, Jamie Martin, Jonty Loveless, Bailey Loveless.
Calmore Sports: Bailey, Brewster, Carty, Croft, Johns, Johnson, Lavelle, Manning, Perry, Taylor, Wright.
