The introduction of ‘white ball’ cricket into the ECB British Gas Southern League got the thumbs up from players, officials and spectators alike.
Except that League President Alan Bundy would like to see players having numbers on the back of their shirts.
Watching the game at Burridge, he said: “I found it very positive and everyone seemed to enjoy the new concept, except that I found it difficult to identify the players in their new coloured attire.”
“I imagine the new kits have only just arrived, but numbers on the shirts would be a definite plus.”
The white leather balls were well received too and all stood up well – especially the two used on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground, where over 600 runs were scored.
Mr Bundy added his praise to the groundsmen.
“A considerable amount of effort went in to adapting the sightscreens with black sheeting. That’s no easy task, so the players owe the groundsmen and their helpers a real vote of thanks,” he said.
All Premier Division 50-over cricket will be played in coloured togs and using a white ball, but when the games revert to the all-day format in early June traditional ‘whites’ will be the order of the day.
