Daniel Escott, who broke the Nawab of Pataudi’s long standing batting record at Winchester College last year, produced a stunning individual performance to guide Oxford University to a 103-run victory over Cambridge in the annual Varsity Match at The Parks.
The Southsea-based 19-year old celebrated his Blue with a second innings century – he struck 15 boundaries in his 125 – and then, bowling his right-arm leg-spin, wrecked Cambridge with a spell of 6-71 which saw the Light Blues, chasing a victory target of 402, bowled out for 298.
Escott made 36 in Oxford’s first innings total of 267, but didn’t bowl as Cambridge made 182 in reply. His 125 was top score in Oxford’s second innings total of 316-5.
