Ventnor take a handy seven-point lead into Saturday’s crunch Southern Premier Division 2 match at Ripsley Park after an unexpected round 16 twist saw title rivals Liphook & Ripsley toppled at Fawley and Hartley Wintley lose to lowly Bashley (Rydal) seconds.
While the islanders were confirming Paultons’ relegation with an eight-wicket win at Steephill, Liphook fell to a seven wicket defeat at Holbury, and Bashley end their relegation worries with a seven-wicket victory over Hartley Wintney.
Six of Paultons’ top order made starts in the Steephill bowl but only Robbie Pike (59) got above 20 as Ventnor’s Z-men, Zach (3-36) and Zeph Wells claimed five of the eight wickets that fell.
Paultons’ 175-8 was overhauled with 13 overs to spare, top Island primary school teacher Ben Woodhouse leading the lesson with an unbeaten 80 (one six and 11 fours) which had the Steephill regulars out of their seats. West Indian Anthony Alleyne made 53 not out.

Liphook appeared to be going nicely at 130-4 through Suman Ganguly (47) and Harry Munt (45), but lost their last six wickets for a meagre 19 runs and were dismissed for 149, one shy of what could prove a precious batting bonus point.
Sufian Munir blasted 50 of Fawley’s initial 59 runs and then sat back to watch Hampshire 50-plus star Andy Parratt hit an unbeaten 46 alongside Usman Ali’s 34.
Sean Read (3-19) and George Wilson (3-41) shared the bowling spoils as Bashley rolled Hartley Wintney out for 120 – a total Alex Turner (42) and Will Tripcony (27) gleefully polished off to steer their side 20 points clear of Fawley with two to play.
Jon Hudson was the all-round hero of Waterlooville’s 61-run win at OTs & Romsey, a result which effectively puts Charlie King’s side out of promotion contention.
OTs crashed to 71 all out after Hudson (47) and Sonny Reynolds (22) had lifted the Ville from 10-3 to post 132-9, James Trodd (3-22), Lewis Allen (2-13) and left-arm spinner Matt Bampton (2-21) taking the bowling credits. The visitors lost four wickets for 16 runs at one point.
OTs lost both openers with only three runs on the board and, after Hudson (4-12) had struck again – this time with the ball – they lurched to 39-7. Harry Tulk (23) and teenager Kamran Dhariwal (15) were the only batsmen to put up much resistance as the side slumped to 71 all out.
