Left-arm spinner Matt Bampton took 4-29 and snapped up two catches – but, despite his efforts, was unable to spare OTs & Romsey a three-wicket defeat by Ventnor in the Steephill bowl.
Defending a modest 160, OTs certainly went down fighting and had Ventnor 114-7 before Ben Woodhouse (30 not out) and Rob Snell (18 not out) turned the tide.
It looked ominous for OTs when James Cheek (50) and Neil Westhorpe (38) moved Ventnor’s reply to 93-2, but the islanders collapsed against Bampton (pictured above by Terry Jamieson) and Rob Newman (2-29), losing five wickets for 25 runs.
But when the spin duo completed their ten-over spells, Ventnor regained their grip and went on to win the game.
Earlier, OTs dropped to 33-4 before Charlie King (56) and Iain Woodhall (37) rescued them with a 78-run fifth wicket stand. Hampshire Under-15 prospect Zeph Wells, who took 8-37 in an SPL1 match at Sarisbury Athletic last season, returned 4-33 for Ventnor.
