He’s the oldest swinger in town ! At 58 years young, John Adams opened the bowling for Gosport Borough in last weekend’s key Southern Premier Division 3 win at Hythe & Dibden – a result which keeps the Turk towners in the promotion hunt and the Watersiders fearing for their immediate future at the bottom.
Adams is wondering if he’s created a new ‘record’ of sorts by becoming the Premier League’s oldest opening bowler – one the statisticians at Waterlooville are working at.
Was the late, great Stan Rudder 58 year old (younger or older) when he played in the Ville’s SPL3 relegation season of 2003 ? Watch this space.
A talented sportsman, Adams spent many a season playing Hampshire League cricket for Locks Heath when arguably he might have been plying his trade in higher echelons elsewhere.
He’s still very useful now – as he proved by top scoring for the Hampshire Seniors’ 50s team against Dorset at Calmore a week or more so. He had been drafted in as a late replacement for the county, but took the new ball at Jones Lane because Privett all-rounder hero Jacob Harris, duly suited and booted, was being wined and dined at Glorious Goodwood.
Adams, above, who conceded 31 runs in his tidy seven-over spell (his first bowl of the season), didn’t have to bat as Gosport chased down Hythe’s 201-9 with two balls to spare, but he was due next in as Greg Kitchin (37 not out) bailed the Borough out of the mire at 142-6 after opener Lee Harrop (77) had been caught off Hampshire U16 spinner Ben Holbrook.
Hythe’s total was build around Tom Gates (49), Wayne Royan (42) and Dan Taylor (35).
