A promising South Australia left-arm spin bowler, a talented Tasmanian teenage batsman and a highly rated Victorian run-getter make up an Etite International Academy in-take into ECB Southern Electric Premier League cricket this summer.
Left-arm spin all-rounder Tom Andrews, from Adelaide, will play for Bashley (Rydal), Tasmanian Sean Willis for Ventnor, and 21-year old Melbourne ace Seb Gotch for Lymington.
A fourth young Australian Jake Doran will play in the Home Counties Premier League for Henley.
It is the third successive season promising youngsters selected from the Cricket Australia programme are being based at the Ageas Bowl and allocated to local Premier League clubs.
They are due to arrive in April and, provided entry visas are obtained, will be available for the start of the Premier League season on May 2.
Originally from the Northern Territory, Bashley (Rydal) bound Tom Andrews is regarded in Australia an exciting young spin talent, who SA have engaged as a West End Redbacks rookie.
“2013-14 was a break out year for the young left-arm orthodox bowler,” said South Australia media officer Fiona Crowe“Despite making his Future’s League debut in 2012, it wasn’t until 2014 when 19 year old left-armer snared four wickets against Victoria, including a 3/45 second innings where he and fellow spinner Adam Zampa secured the win for South Australia.
“He played in our 2013 ICC Under-19 World Cup side, finishing the competition with a total of eight wickets, with an economy of 4.31.
Bashley (Rydal) skipper Richard Morris has welcomed the arrival of Darwin-born Andrews at the BCG.
“Tom is a couple of years older than Jaron Morgan who we had with us last season and that makes a bit of a difference at that age,” he said.
“He is doing really well in Australia and it is going to be good for us to have a bowler this season as opposed to a batter, especially with Sam Thompson in the same side. Spinners can influence a game all-day long as opposed to a batter who, if he plays one bad shot or has a bit of bad luck, his game can be over.
Seb Gotch, pictured, a 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman from Melbourne who turned out for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash, joins Lymington with a glowing reference from Victoria all-rounder Alex Keath, who played for Bournemouth in 2013.
Gotch, also a talented Aussie Rules footballer, was Melbourne Cricket Club’s most valuable player last summer and has represented Australia at under-19 level.
“Seb is an excellent player. He has the ability to score big runs. He is able to read the situation of the game very well and can play unorthodox when required,” said Keath, who plays his Grade cricket for the MCC.
“He has been pushing for a first class debut this season and is also a member of the Adelaide Strikers squad.”
Australia Under 19’s team-mate Sean Willis, who recently featured in an Australia XI alongside Michael Clarke against Bangladesh, will play his Premier League cricket on the Isle of Wight for Ventnor.
Last season was Sean’s first year on the Tasmanian Tigers list and during his first season, Willis played in the Tasmanian Futures League (Second XI) side as well as Captaining the Tasmanian U19s at the National Championships.
A solid national carnival saw him selected in the Australian U19 Squad for the World Cup where he was selected in the Australian team, which reached the tournament semi-finals in the UAE.
On his return from national duties Sean made 62 in a Futures League match against Queensland and then went on to play in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League final for his club South Hobart-Sandy Bay.
Willis spent the 2014 Australian winter at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane and could make his Tasmanian Tigers debut in Sheffield Shield cricket before he arrives in this country.
