You've all heard the one about the shattered car windscreen and the souvenir cricket ball on the back seat. If you haven't, just ask Tom Hockenhull, the Fair Oak captain, about it !
Tom was looking forward to a pleasant afternoon among cricketing friends at Langley Manor's immaculate Knellers Lane ground, but it all began to go wrong for him when he called wrongly at the toss and watched the Manor pile up a thumping 315-7. Fair Oak gave it their best shot on the subsequent run chase, none more so than big hitting Asad Abbas, who struck a powerful 49.
Tom, only too aware of AA's prowess, strategically moved his car to a 'safe house' behind the LM pavilion. Alas, Abbas picked it out a treat, launching a maximum over the pavilion - and straight through the rear side window of Tom's brand new car .. and ball nestling perfectly on the back seat !
Fair Oak made a commendable 269-run response to Manor 315-7, but Tom drove home felling well and truly a loser.
There are two 'plus points' to the yarn: Tom's 9-5 job is in car insurance and he had some extra air conditioning in the car on his journey home !
