Fourteen-year old Bailey (left) and his dad Andy, right, weren’t far off from being a match winning father and son combination for Fawley in their Southern Premier League match with Division 2 high fliers Tichborne Park at Holbury.
Bailey put his weekend homework from the nearby Noadswood School to one side to celebrate his first team debut with four wickets, while later Andy featured in an 87-run opening partnership which ought to have laid the foundations for a successful Fawley run chase.
Parratt junior certainly found himself thrown in at the deep end when Fawley skipper Callum Earl put him on to bowl his left-arm spin shortly before tea.
Second-in-the-table Tichborne were rattling along at 212-6, with Martin Cheyney having just brought up his century and captain Will Allam his 50.
But, in the space of 22 deliveries, he removed both Cheyney and Allam – and had taken two other Tichborne wickets to finish the PT innings off with figures of 4-12 off 3.4 overs.
He clean bowled Allam (57) and, soon after Aiden Pond had been run out, rearranged Ed Berry’s stumps for a duck.
Third up for young Bailey was the prize wicket of Cheyney, who holed out to four-wicket teenage paceman Adam Freeman for 103.
Parratt’s fourth scalp was last man James Long, who was caught by South African Aashiq Rhode for six.
Bailey led his team-mates off the Waterside field and then sat back and watched his father Andy make 40 and share an 87-run start with Paul Marks, who went on to get 96.
Fawley, who had won their two previous games after an indifferent start to the season, were well placed at 192-4.
But when Rob Leach (34) was caught off the spin of Pond, the oilmen lost their way and, despite the efforts of Marks, finished an agonising four runs adrift of the Tichborne total at 232-7.
The narrow defeat took the gloss of Bailey Parratt’s debut day – but he’ll be itching for another bowl when Fawley host Hartley Wintney on Saturday.
The Parratts aren’t the only father-and-son cricketing duo playing locally.
Five miles up the A36, James and left-arm spinning son Ethan are a regular feature in the improving Totton & Eling side.
And another 14 year old, Old Netley & Highfield all-rounder Tom South has made a number of encouraging performances for the Hampshire Academy this season.
