Something must give when Fawley and Portsmouth – two of the three unbeaten sides in Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 – collide at Holbury on Saturday.
The pair, along with newly promoted Tichborne Park, have won their opening three games.
Fawley, relegated from SPL1 last season, ripped Langley Manor out for 79 before racing to a six-wicket win.
Spin duo Wayne Smith (5-17) and Wayne Royan (3-12) did the damage as the Manor crashed from 35-0 to 79 all out. Tom Gates led the victory roll.
Portsmouth, generally recognised as favourites for the title, made short work of Old Tauntonians & Romsey, beating the visitors by nine wickets on Southsea seafront.
OTR were progressing nicely while Hampshire’s Chris Wood (43) was at the crease, but they plunged from 52-1 to 105 all out, with Vickram Dawson, Andrew Marston and Izy Ahmad all taking three wickets.
Once Jack Marston (43) and Alex Hammond (30 not out) had put on 78 for the first wicket, the cast was dye.
Gary Storey hit an SPL best 91, but finished on the losing side in the Hursley Park-Tichborne Park derby at The Quarters.
Tichborne went from an uncertain 87-4 to 216-6 largely on the back of Will Allam’s 62 – the captain’s last knock before undergoing Nasal surgery – and it proved just too many for chasing Hursley Park.
They benefitted from a century start between Storey and Ivo Tennant (31), but a promising 141-2 faded as Queenslander Justin Reid (4-44) came back for a second spell and the last five wickets fell for 14 runs.
Hursley fell four runs short at 212 all out, with four balls of the match to spare.
Newly promoted Bashley (Rydal) II continue to find live tough in Premier 2. With inspirational skipper Phil Morris still on crutches, Bashley fell to a third straight after losing by six wickets to Paultons.
Tony Richman’s new ball spell of 3-15 had Bashley rocking at 47-4 – a situation Royal Navy bound Ryan Taylor (65) improved alongside Callum Maher (35) and Simon Morris (233 not out).
Any prospect Bashley had of defending a modest 203-6 were blown away by Australian import Chris Hall (57) and Eric Linge (61). Richman scored the winning runs as Paultons toasted a six-wicket win.
