Hockey playing Sammy Laurent, pictured, celebrated his Premier League cricket debut in some style with a 5-43 return in Bashley (Rydal) II’s eventually washed out SPL2 match against South Wilts II at Bemerton.
The 19-year old Sports Science student, who plays in goal for Nottingham University’s hockey team, lined up with fellow teen Sean Read (3-42) to have South Wilts’ batting in tatters. The teenage tormentors reduced SW to 66-7 before a lower order rescue act lifted the Salisbury side to 186 all out.
Tom Pearce (76) and Dom Webb (39) dug SW out of trouble, but the match was eventually abandoned with Bashley 47-1 in reply, Neil Thurgood 21 not out.
Play only began in one other Division 2 match, with Queenslander Justin Reid smacking 38 (six 4s) as Tichborne Park belted 54-2 off 5.4 overs before the rain fell at Hartley Wintney. There was no play at Calmore Sports, Hambledon or Sparsholt.
It was a similar story in SPL3, where only Basingstoke & North Hants II (67-0 v Hursley Park) and Havant II (26-2 at Lymington) got their innings’ started. There was no play at Langley Manor, Ryde or St Cross Symondians II.
