Newly promoted Tichborne Park successfully defended a modest 127 to beat Bashley (Rydal) II - the side that pipped them to last year's Southern Electric Premier League, Division 3 title - by nine runs.
They hit back to have Bashley rocking at 30-5 - Queenslander Jamie Reid taking 4-19 - before restricting the visitors to 119-8 in a tight finish.
Tichborne lost their openers cheaply, but Martin Cheyney (27) and Tom Allam (42) took the score to 86-2 before the evergreen Neil Taylor (4-15) and Dan Friedman (3-7) sent wickets tumbling and the Park to 127 all out.
Nipping the ball about off the seam, Reid proved too hot to handle for Bashley's top order - half the side being back in the pavilion at 30-5 before Andy Neal (46) restored belief.
The one-time MCC YC all-rounder, aided by Jason Eede and Paul Kemp (18 not out), edged Bashley closer to the target, but ran out of steam eight runs behind.
Hampshire’s Chris Wood and the Newman brothers played the lead roles as Old Tauntonians & Romsey trimmed Langley Manor by 75 runs to open their Division 2 account.
Wood (47) and Pete Newman (41) top scored in OTR’s 223-7 (Will Edwards 31), Simon Peters picking up 4-50 when the hosts were chasing quick runs before tea.
Graham Noble (59) and Naz Ayub (30) eased the Manor’s reply to 95-2, but Wood (3-25) and spinner Rob Newman (4-20) dismantled the innings which ended 148 all out.
Nathan Feltham (41) hauled Paultons out of trouble in his first home appearance since his move from Fair Oak. Paultons were in some trouble against Hambledon at 83-7 when Feltham made his runs and guided the Ower side to 163-9, former Hampshire spinner Ian Turner taking 3-34. No one in the Hambledon side managed to score more than 20 as Eric Linge (4-20) and Andrew Denney (2-8) whipped the visitors out for 115.
New Fawley skipper Tom Gates inspired the Oilmen to a seven-wicket win over Hursley Park at The Quarters.
He took 3-32 and then scored a match winning 95 to lead Fawley to a second consecutive victory. Hursley began on a promising note and were 81-1 (Gary Storey 51) when four wickets fell cheaply. Andy Marks (37), Oli Green (22) and Ryan Tench (24) got later runs, amid Gates taking his three wickets.
Hursley's 212-9 came under threat when Gates, with 95, and Kieran Earl (55)
produced a club record SPL opening stand of 175. Former Dorset speedster Martyn Ford took 2-34 but was unable to save Hursley.
Sparsholt’s batting crumbled for the second consecutive week when Division 2 favourites Portsmouth bowled them out for a disappointing 105 to secure a 26-run win at the Norman Edwards Ground.
To compound the misery, Sparsholt probably fancied their chances of winning after dismissing Portsmouth themselves for 131.
New Zealander Kyle Ruffell did his best, taking 4-25 in two spells and then comfortably top scoring with 35 as Sparsholt wickets fell all around him.
On a day bowlers dominated, Island-based Harry Collier (34) and, significantly, later Australian Pat Burns (33) top scored for Portsmouth.
Sparsholt appeared in good shape when Ruffell (35) and Tom Foster (19) took their reply to 58-2.
But Sparsholt’s last eight wickets fell for 47 and the side was dismissed for 105, one run less than they made losing their opening game to Langley Manor
