BURRIDGE REFUSE TO LIE DOWN IN CHAMPIONSHIP RACE

20/4/2017

Havant may only need two points for the title, but Burridge are refusing to lie down in their quest to chase a now unrealistic ECB Southern Premier League championship triumph.
They rushed Lymington out for 98 before racing to a seven-wicket win at the Sports Ground, so often a graveyard for top visiting teams.
But this time it was Lymington who were buried in their own soil as Dan Stancliffe, pictured, (3-22) and Nick McMurray (3-26) ran amok with the new ball.
They lost their top four wickets for a meagre eight runs and half the Lymington side was back in the pavilion with only 33 runs on the board.
Richard Lock (32) and Ollie Calcott (24) were the only two batsmen to reach double figures before Geoff Dods (2-29) and Sully White (2-13) ended the innings at 98 in the 32nd over.
Two early wickets by Simon Beetham (2-33) ensured Burridge didn’t have it all their own way, but 16-year old Alex Willoughby (27) got his head down and forged a third-wicket partnership with Dods (42) before Will Steward lofted two big sixes to put an end to Lymington’s agony.

WEATHERLEY HITS MAIDEN ST CROSS SYMONDIANS CENTURY

Hampshire’s Joe Weatherley struck his maiden century in St Cross Symondians’ colours as the Winchester side chased down Alton’s 240-7 to beat their ECB Southern Premier League rivals by four wickets at the Green Jackets Ground.
It was the fifth time this season England’s former Under-19 captain had hit the treble-figure mark, Weatherley’s other four centuries having been in Hampshire Second XI games.
His 128 enabled St Cross, captained by Tom Foyle, to post only their second win in 11 Premier Division matches and spare them the ignominy of going into their final match against Bashley (Rydal) in second-from-bottom position.
Weatherley hit three sixes and 13 fours in his first St Cross century, having made other hundreds in his time as Hampshire Academy captain.
“I certainly hit at least two centuries for the Academy, but was quite apt at getting myself out at 98 and 99.
“My maths have got a bit better now,” he laughed.
He shared a century second-wicket stand with Louis Kimber (27) before Jack Bransgrove thumped a run-a-ball 45 not out to sweep St Cross to victory with four overs to spare.
Adam Rouse, still recovering from a badly broken finger playing for Kent against Glamorgan at Cardiff last month, made only one, but did take a rather expensive 3-61 with the ball.
Bowling at the latter stages of Alton’s 240-7, he dismissed the Brewers’ leading run scorers Mark (66) and Michael Heffernan (55).
Earlier, Australian Dan Hutton (41) and Oxford University’s Rob Heywood (37) made runs for Alton, while teenage KES spin prospect Jacob Fay took 2-23.

FIVE MAIDEN CENTURIES AS SEASON REACHES CLIMAX

Five Southern Premier League batsmen struck maiden centuries in the latest round of matches, among them Bournemouth’s Luke Matthews, whose 110 effectively torpedoed any prospect Hook & Newnham Basics had of lifting the Division 1 crown.
The tall Exeter University student, pictured, hit two sixes and ten fours in his century which underpinned the Lions’ 230-6 – a total Hook got no where near matching.
Trojans hockey ace Toby Edwards provided the fireworks for New Milton, forcing drivers to make a hasty evacuation of the Fernhill car park as the launched a non-stop six-hit assault on the Academy bowlers.
Edwards, only recently restored to first team action, dented four cars – one a Mercedes – as he flayed eight ‘maximums’ in a brutal 109 (13 fours) and virtually single-handedly swept the Green & Golds past the Academy’s 21307 (Tom Scriven 95).
Less than a mile away, Chris Vaughan toasted his first SPL ton, setting up Bashley Rydal’s 73-run win over visiting Ventnor with the bat and then taking four wickets with his new-found left-arm spin action.
Richard Lock scored 101 in a losing cause as Lymington went down by two wickets at champions designate Havant, while Rufus Bullough made a treble for the first time as promotion chasing Fair Oak won by 59 runs at relegated Ryde.

PREMIER DIVISION: BROKEN FINGER - STILL HITS CENTURY !

Emergency opener Jeremy Bulled overcame the pain barrier to celebrate a maiden ECB Southern Premier League century as title favourites Havant trimmed St Cross Symondians by 22 runs to cement their position at the top.
Bulled fractured a middle finger keeping wicket two weeks ago and had to be persuaded to open the batting as neither skipper Ben Walker nor Rob Gibson was available.
He underlined his batting credentials with a back-to-the-wall 90 for Havant at Bashley (Rydal) last month.
And rose to the task at the Green Jackets Ground by underpinning Havant’s 275-6 with a competitive best 113, an innings which lasted 153 balls and contained a six and nine fours.
With middle-order support from Chris Stone (35), Andy Gorvin (30) and Richard Hindley (27), Bulled guided Havant towards a match winning total.
Tom Foyle’s first SPL century for St Cross Symondians – he clouted three sixes and 12 fours in a best ever 102 – ensured that Havant kept a watchful eye on the scoreboard.
But when Foyle ran out of steam and was fourth out at 169, the St Cross threat ebbed away and though Charlie Ayers (41) kept the board ticking, Symondians lost wickets and closed 253 all out, left-arm spinner Thomas Vanderslik taking 3-37.

VAUGHAN DIALS 999 AND COMES UP WITH MAIDEN CENTURY

Picture
Left-hand all-rounder Chris Vaughan stole the show with a maiden ECB Southern Premier League century and a four-wicket haul as third-placed Bashley (Rydal) kept their outside title hopes alive with a 73-run win over visiting Ventnor at the BCG.
The 27-year old Vaughan, who has recently qualified as a fully fledged paramedic, followed up a competitive best 107 with a 4-36 return, bowling his redesigned left-arm spin.
His hundred underpinned Bashley’s 277-7, while Vaughan’s slow bowling revived his side’s prospects of a maximum-point haul as the relegated islanders sank from 120 without loss to 204 all out.
Vaughan was at the crease early on when Tom Gates became the first of three victims for teenager George Willis, who caught the eye with a tidy 3-29 return.
He added 138 with opener and second-wicket partner Simon Ridley (44), but admitted it was hard work.
“We had to graft for our runs for the initial 25 overs. Ventnor bowled accurately up front, especially young George, who deserved his figures,” Vaughan said.
“But it became easier when Michel Porter came in. He’s bang in form, played shots from the off and had the scoreboard racing along.”
Porter (44) and Gavin Bailiff (26) added quick runs before Vaughan fell at 257-5 for a richly deserved 107, which contained 14 boundaries.
It took Bashley a long while to break the season’s best 120-run opening stand teen duo Ben Duggan (85) and Ben Herridge (48) produced for the visitors.
Between them, they breached the boundary rope 15 times, but once Vaughan, who has abandoned his left-arm seam in favour of spin, trapped Herridge leg before and then nipped out Australian Alex Glendenning. Bashley were on their way.
Duggan was eventually eighth out at 185, but despite his defiance, Bashley continued to make inroads at the opposite end with a Josh Digby wicket brace coinciding by a spectacular Red Arrows fly past overhead.
Toby Corbin (34) nicked a late batting bonus point for Ventnor, who were dismissed for 204, with Jake Lilley taking 3-48.

PREMIER 2: FIVE-WICKET PARRATT GIVES HARTLEY THE BIRD

Fourteen year old left-arm spinner Bailey Parratt, pictured, with a 5-11 return, was on the brink of bowling Fawley to a critical Southern Premier League Division 2 victory at Hartley Wintney when the weather turned sour.
Among Parratt’s victims was HW top scorer Danny Plume (47).
Three of his other victims were cleaned bowled and a fourth trapped leg before wicket.
The North Hampshire side were in dire straits at 125-9 when heavy rain caused the match to be abandoned six overs before tea.
The washout was a blow to Fawley’s survival plans – the ‘no result’ leaving them second from bottom in the table with two games left.

PREMIER 2: RAIN BOOST FOR PAULTONS' SURVIVAL HOPES

Paultons' batsman Nathan Feltham has his stumps re-arranged. Pic Roy Honeybone.
Heavy rain that caused the abandonment of their visit to South Wilts in the ninth over after tea may have been a blessing in disguise for relegation threatened Paultons’.
South Wilts were rattling along at seven runs an over and were going well at 55-1 in pursuit of Paultons’ 204 when the rains came.
The ‘no result’ leaves Paultons third from bottom, effectively seven points above Fawley – but with table toppers Calmore Sports next up at Whitemoor Lane on Saturday, 12.30.
Nigel Feltham blazed a quick-fire 46 (four sixes and five fours) at the top of the innings for Paultons, while Robbie Pike (49) and Josh Metcalfe (27) batted effectively in the middle-order as Paultons made 204 (Tom Pearce 3-48).
But the total was set to come under close scrutiny as Owain Phillips (35 not out) and Tom Cowley had South Wilts well placed when the weather set in.

PREMIER 2: LOSING RUN COSTS TROJANS TOP SPOT

18/10/2016

Summer-long leaders Trojans have been bundled off the top of the Southern Premier League Division 2 table after suffering a fourth defeat in five outings.
A crushing nine-wicket defeat at Loperwood Park has dropped the faltering Stoneham club out of the promotion positions for the first time this season and handed Calmore Sports pole position with two games to play.
A 42-run win at Hambledon has enabled Tichborne Park to leapfrog Trojans, who are now eight points adrift of the promotion places.
Trojans, who face a demanding finish to the season against Hambledon and then Tichborne Park, were reduced to 56-5 by Calmore, whose bowlers took full advantage of the favourable conditions.
Trojans fielded arguably their strongest batting line-up, but needed Adbul Manjra (30) and Mario Mohammed (20 not out) to provide a mid-innings rescue act at Loperwood Park.
They improved Trojans’ cause but, after a telling 3-26 spell by James Rose, it needed last-man Jordan Wright (27) to lift the final score to 144.
The Trojans spirits lifted when Jamie Donaldson bowled Calmore skipper Mark Lavelle immediately after the restart.
But that was Trojans’ solitary moment of joy as Matt Hardy and teenager Ben Johns took command and guided Calmore to a nine-wicket win.
Hardy was in awesome form, cracking 12 fours in his unbeaten 76, while Johns continued his good run of form, hitting 49 not out.

DIVISION 2: TICHBORNE PARK COMING UP HARD ON THE RAILS

Tichborne Park are coming up hard on the outside in a late bid to secure a Southern Premier League Division 2 promotion spot.
In denting Hambledon’s own ambitions with a rain adjusted 42-run win at Ridge Meadow, Tichborne moved into second place in the log, seven points behind leaders Calmore Sports.
“It’s going to the wire, but we’re going to have to win our last two games against Hartley Wintney and Trojans, there’s no questioning that,” said Queenslander Justin Reid, who has succeeded Will Allam as Tichborne captain.
Reid (58) and fellow opener Martin Cheyney (64) effectively won the match for Tichborne with a 123-run opening stand.
With spin duo George Harding (4-37) and Indy Chakrabarti (3-44) breaking through, Park dropped to 197 all out.
Set a rain revised target of 186 off 46 overs, George Marshall (58) put Hambledon ahead of the clock, but when he became a second victim of the influential Doug Butler (3-27), the Dons collapsed.
Eight wickets fell for 23 runs as Hambledon imploded against Tom Allam (3-47), elder brother Will and leg spinner Ed Berry.  They were dismissed for 144.
Sparsholt’s home match with Bashley (Rydal) II was rained off.

PREMIER 3: PROMOTION PRIZE ON OFFER AT OAKS

Fair Oak and St Cross Symondians seconds square up at Lapstone Park on Saturday (12.30) with a probable Southern Premier League Division 3 promotion slot the prize for the victors.
The pair lie second and third, respectively, behind table topping Langley manor in the log, St Cross currently trailing Oaks by 11 points.
While Langley Manor were washed out against Waterlooville, their two challengers enhanced their claims – Fair Oak winning by 59 runs at relegated Ryde and St Cross Symondians making it four wins in a row by beating their Havant counterparts by five wickets.
Rufus Bullough, pictured, was the hero of Oaks win on the island, hitting a maiden Premier League 113 not out.
With Hampshire Under-14s starlet Fletcha Middleton (50) providing invaluable support, the former Peter Symonds College student hauled Fair Oak out of the mire after Matt Webb (3-26) had struck early early blows with the new ball.
Gradually the pair turned the tide, with a near century stand which largely set up Oaks’ 239-8.
Bullough, who has been playing for Old Elizabethans to coincide with his drama studies at Worcester University, went on to smack three sixes and 13 fours in a career best knock.
Initially, Ryde made a decent fist of chasing down the target, with Ben Wadmore (42), Sam Rockey (28) and Cameron Mitchell (26) taking their response to 112-1.
But Ryde’s reply fell apart against off-spinner Rhys Oxley, whose 5-19 return triggered a collapse which saw the last nine wickets fall for 59 runs and the already doomed island team sink to 171 all out.
Steve Mitchell (3-24) plunged Havant II into trouble at 14-4 and later 42-7 before Graham Burns (38) and Jack Davies (24) rallied to lift the final total to 119 against St Cross Symondians II at the Green Jackets.
Matt Howarth (3-40) and Harry Trussler (2-18) cut through the lower order before a sound start by Paul Hawkins (45) and Graham Barrett (25) laid the foundations for a home five-wicket win.

PREMIER 3: TENSION MOUNTS IN RELEGATION SCRAP

There’s seven points in it between Hursley Park and Lymington II in the battle to stave off relegation from Southern Premier Division 3 into the Hampshire League.
Hursley hold the higher ground, despite suffering a crushing nine-wicket defeat at Lymington, where the visitors tumbled from 72-3 (Boswell Chapungu 27) to 131 all out.
Teenager Tom Flynn, with an unbeaten 26, found a lone battle as Guy Layman (5-26) and Ollie Kelly (3-26) ripped out their remaining batting.
Terry Crabb, with 13 boundaries in a season’s best 72 not out, and Kelly (39) swept Lymington to a nine-wicket victory with 25 overs to spare.
With promotion chasing Fair Oak to host in their final match, Lymington must realistically win at Havant II on Saturday and hope Hursley Park slip up in their two games against Basingstoke & North Hants and Havant.  Ryde are already relegated.

TREAGUS EYES PREMIER ONE BATTING PRIZE AFTER 132

Glyn Treagus [Andy Brooks]
Glyn Treagus boosted his prospects of winning the Southern Premier League’s Division 1 batting prize with an unbeaten century in Andover’s 76-run rain affected win over relegated Totton & Eling.
The unbeaten 132 he made at Southern Gardens was his tenth SPL century and took his tally for the season to 605 – second and 49 runs behind Basil Akram, who is spearheading Sarisbury Athletic’s charge for the title itself.
Treagus, who ironically hit a century against Sarisbury earlier in the season, shared two significant stands with the Hooper brothers.
He added 124 for the second wicket with Ali Hooper (75) and then an unbroken 79 with skipper Matt Hooper (34 not out) as Andover totalled 279-5 off a rain reduced 45 overs.
Ollie Perrin carried Totton’s reply after the Eels, chasing 245 off 39.3 overs, slumped to 32-3.
Perrin hit 65 as Totton made 169-7 in reply.
The win, Andover’s tenth in 15 games, secures a probable fourth place finish for the Lions behind pre-season favourites Basingstoke & North Hants, whose match at Liphook was abandoned towards the mid-point of the second innings.
Basingstoke batted first at Ripsley Park and after the early loss of Dan Belcher (7), fellow opener Craig Williamson (23) and Richard Vinn (16) added 48 for the second wicket.
The Bountymen continued to find scoring runs tough and slid from 105-3 to 106-6 as Ben Julin (14) Will Phillips (23) and Mitch Stokes, with a golden duck, were all out.
However, the visitors batted all the way to the final over of their innings, as Martyn James (19) and young George Metzger (10) added valuable runs as they were all out for 157.
Skipper Charles Janczur (3-23) and Sean Burton (3-46) were the pick of the home bowlers.
The Liphook reply got off to the worst possible start, as Stokes (2-17) struck early on dismissing Rob Nickel (1) and Giles Cover (0) to leave them 11-2.
Teen Gab Broadhurst (12) did not last much longer before being caught and bowled by Martyn James (1-34) making it 22-3 Liphook’s best player Suman Ganguly (42 not out from 41 balls) then took centre stage as along with Harry Munt (14) they added 46 for the fourth wicket.
However, with the score on 81-4 from 21 overs the game was abandoned due to heavy rain.
The Rowledge-Old Tauntonians & Romsey match was postponed.

SARISBURY ATHLETIC HOOKED-ON AS FAVOURITES

1/9/2016

PictureLuke Matthews [Echo]
Sarisbury Athletic are hot favourites for the Division 1 title – and an immediate return to the top table of local ECB Southern Premier League cricket.
The championship race tilted dramatically in their favour after a 97-run win at Portsmouth coincided with chief rivals Hook & Newnham Basics crashing to a thumping 115-run defeat to Bournemouth.
It’s left Sarisbury 18 points ahead of Hook going into Saturday’s penultimate match against lowly Liphook & Ripsley at Allotment Road.
If they win that, they’ll be in a virtually unassailable position, with Hook (at home to relegated Totton & Eling this weekend) finishing their season against third-placed Basingstoke & North Hants.
Sarisbury’s win on Southsea seafront was all the more remarkable as they managed to defend a relatively modest 149 against a Portsmouth side that has sailed way off course after winning its opening five games of the season.
That Sarisbury managed to total 149 owed much to their lower order, particularly eighth-wicket pair Chris Sanders (26) and Dan Goldstraw (32).
Sarisbury were rocking at 92-7 when the pair came together to add a precious 40 runs before both fell to teenage Australian Fraser Hay, who finished with 4-31.
Matt Journeaux’s in-form side knew they were on a winner directly Basil Akram (3-17) had Hay, a dangerous, big hitting opener, caught behind for one.
His dismissal triggered a collapse of seismic proportions as Portsmouth collapsed like a pack of cards.
They lost half their wickets for 19 runs, with only skipper Richard Locke (13), sixth out at 44, reaching double figures.
Jason Allmark and Phillip Jewell took two wickets each and evergreen left-armer Goldstraw 3-6 as Portsmouth crumbled to a meagre 52 all out.
Hook & Newnham Basics went into their match at Chapel Gate only three points behind Sarisbury Athletic – but returned to their North Hampshire base battered and bruised after a crushing defeat.
Ironically, Hook enjoyed immediate success when Jordan Hobday bowled Bournemouth skipper Martin Miller second ball.
But the hosts then set about building a match winning score, as opener Ben Bridgen (55) and Luke Matthews, with a maiden 110, put on 121 for the second wicket before spinner Anik Divecha broke the stand.
Bournemouth looked in good shape to amass a massive total, as they reached 155-4 after 35 overs, but they only added 75 in the last 15 overs, as they finished on 230-6 with Ryan Wiltshire unbeaten at the end on 34.
Harry Came (2-27) removed century man Matthews, whose innings included 10 fours and two sixes and came from 127 balls.
The Hook reply suffered an early set back, as teenager Kieran Thomson was out with just five on the board.
Ben Thane (23) and Harry Came (17) nearly added 50 for the second wicket, but both were out in the space of five runs, as Andrew Woodward (4-40) continued to take out the top order.
With Matt Love and Nick Willcock following shortly afterwards Hook found themselves 53-5.
Jordan Hobday (22) and Matt Buckingham (19) tried to get the visitors back into the game.
The pair added 40 for the sixth wicket, but little left-arm spinner Dominic Clutterbuck (2-24) dismissed both of them thanks to catches from Woodward.  Hook were bowled out for 115.

HAVANT UN-LOCK LYMINGTON AND MARCH ON

Richard Lock hit a maiden ECB Southern Premier League century before Lymington slipped to a two-wicket defeat by title favourites Havant.   The Zimbabwean hit 101 in Lymington’s 193-8 (Simon Beetham 32).
Ben Walker responded with 4-19 for Havant, but quickly joined Jez Bulled back in the pavilion as Matt Metcalfe (3-41) took two wickets before the leaders had a run on the board.
Robert Gibson (36) and Stuart Ransley (30) began to turn things around, but Havant continued to lose wickets – all except vice-captain Andy Gorvin (51), whose half-century and key partnership with Peter Hopson (25) took the hosts to the brink of victory.
South Wilts' scheduled visit to Alton was postponed following heavy overnight rain which swamped the Jubilee Ground.

GALE FORCE BURRIDGE BLOW ST CROSS AWAY

1/9/2016

Burridge clipped two points off Havant’s lead at the top of the ECB Southern Premier League when they successfully overcame gale force winds to beat St Cross Symondians by five wickets at Botley Road.
Stand-in captain Geoff Dods followed up his 3-27 return with the ball to hit a key 42 not out as Burridge overcame a wobble to past the St Cross total of 181.
Burridge go into the last two matches trailing Havant by 20 points and, realistically, need the Hampshire Academy to topple the leaders on the Ageas Bowl Nursery Ground on Saturday if they are to go to the Park on September 3 with any prospect of snatching the title.
With only one win (against relegated Ventnor) in their last ten matches, St Cross were strengthened by the presence of Hampshire’s Joe Weatherley and Adam Rouse, who made a surprise return after suffering a serious hand injury playing for Kent against Glamorgan in Cardiff last month.
The pair perished for eight and 21, respectively, with only Louis Kimber (30) made any lasting impression as St Cross went from 82-3 to 130-4 when Rouse became a third victim of an economical ten-over spell by Dods.
Burridge, who go to Lymington this weekend, were generous in their extras count, conceding 37 in sundries, while St Cross needed a late flurry from Jack Middleton (27) before Sully White (3-28) cleaned up their tail.
Portsmouth Grammar School prospect Alex Willoughby (49) anchored the Burridge reply, batting with maturity and just missed out on a debut half-century.
His dismissal, the first of three wickets for spinner Kimber (3-26), triggered a wobble which saw Burridge drop to 117-5 before Dods (42) and Will Steward (30) added an unbroken 67 to send St Cross slithering to a fifth successive defeat.

TOBY'S TON IS JUST SMASHING

Drivers rushed to move their cars from the boundary edge after New Milton’s Toby Edwards dented four vehicles in an astonishing array of six-hitting at Fernhill.
The pinch hitting youngster smashed eight ‘maximums’ and 13 fours in a whirlwind 109 off only 58 balls as New Milton beat the Hampshire Academy.
His onslaught led to the Green & Golds chasing down the Academy’s 213-7 to win by seven wickets with 23 overs to spare !
"It was pure clean hitting and fantastic to watch,” beamed jubilant New Milton captain Ryan Beck.
“Toby is one of the most destructive batsmen on the local scene on his day.
“All his sixes were on-side and once two cars were hit – albeit with a few minor abrasions – a posse of drivers got out of their seats and moved their vehicles out of Toby’s range and to the far end of the car park.
“It was all rather amusing. Fortunately, there’s no serious damage, but we certainly anticipated one or two windscreens being shattered !”
Ironically, Edwards only got his first team place back last week, having languished in Milton’s Hampshire League side for the whole of July after his return from Loughborough University.
“I got a couple of scores, 65 against OTs and really forced my way back in with a ton against Alton IIs,” explained the former King Edward VI student, who plays hockey locally for Trojans.
Edwards went after the Academy bowling from the start and had his half-century up in no time.
Bashley (Rydal) based teen George Pardoe was among those to suffer, his solitary over going for 26 !
Zac Organ was smacked for four of Edwards’ sixes and Brad Taylor and Jake Goodwin, who have both played Hampshire first team cricket, also suffered.
Skipper Taylor tried nine different bowling permutations before Edwards was well caught in the deep by Tom South.
But by then the damage was done – Dave Wakefield (21), James Haggaty (32) and Ashley Collison (32) playing support roles amid the carnage.
Edwards’ century totally overshadowed an excellent 95 by Young England prospect Tom Scriven, which dominated the Academy’s 213-7 (Collison 4-45).

BASINGSTOKE and North Hants moved up to third in the Southern League Division One table, after a seven wicket win over Portsmouth at Mays Bounty.
It was sweet revenge for the Bountymen, who lost on the south coast earlier in the season.
It was spin king Matt Thankachan, who turned this game on its head, as the visitors slid from 112-1 to 164 all out.
Portsmouth got off to a great start from teenage openers Fraser Hay (80) and Jack Marston (21), who put on 86.
Western Australian Hay, who has been in good nick for Hampshire seconds, blazed a six and 13 fours before Thankachan (4-19) becoming the first of four victims for the teasing off-spinner, who ripped out Portsmouth’s top order.
Vikram Dawson (10) and Andrew Marston (15) managed to move the score towards 150, but a smart caught and bowled by Will Phillips, removed Dawson and then the returning Mitch Stokes (2-24) completed the job, as they were all out for 164.
Basingstoke’s reply got off to a solid start through Dan Belcher (20) and Craig Williamson (23).
Both were out with the score on 49, but the mantle was taken up by the in-form pair of Richard Vinn (44 not out) and Phillips (59), pictured by the Gazette, whose arrival at the Bounty from Durham University has provided Basingstoke with much needed middle-order security..
They added 110 for the third wicket and when Phillips departed, they needed just six for victory.
Australian Ben Julin obliged with his first ball sending Rajeev Verma’s delivery over the boundary rope for a maximum.

TROJANS HAVE THAT 'AFTER EIGHTS' FEEL AND LOSE AGAIN

27/8/2016

Trojans are suffering from a serious case of the jitters as the Southern Premier League Division 2 title race hots up.
After winning their first eight games, Trojans looked nailed-on certainties to win the league.
But two defeats in the past three weeks – and a demanding run-in ahead – Trojans’ are asking questions of themselves.
Their lead at the top was trimmed to a mere eight points by a 14-run defeat by Sparsholt.
After beating Tichborne Park, second placed Calmore Sports are now fancying their own chances, though everything will hinge on the outcome of Trojans’ visit to Loperwood Park on August 20.
Trojans were left kicking themselves after letting Sparsholt off to hook at 43-5 and later 111-8 (Jamie Donaldson 3-26).
James Keoch (35) and former Colden Common all-rounder Chris Mitchell (23) lifted Sparsholt to 159 all out – a total Trojans failed to match.
Dan Babidge (38) and Ed Pope (25) guided their response to 94-3, but Trojans lower order fell apart and they were bowled out for 135.
Teenage left-hander Ben Johns (51) piloted Calmore Sports to a five-wicket win over Tichborne Park, who stumbled from 94-3 to 153 all out.
Mark Lavelle (3-25), Paul Proudley (3-36) and Mike West (2-20) did the damage for Calmore, who were guided home by Ben Moss (27) and James Rose (25).
Fourth placed Hambledon looked anything like promotion contenders as they plunged to 102-7 (Shane Nkomo 42) and an eventual 166 all out at Bemerton.
South Wilts II didn’t experience too many problems polishing off the target, Sam Arnold hitting 42 not out.
Bashley (Rydal) II secured a third successive win when they beat New Forest relegation rivals Fawley by 64 runs – but they are still in the bottom two !
Phil Morris (50) and Ross Grierson (40) secured Bashley’s position at 102-1 at Waterside, where a total of 190-8 proved beyond Fawley.
Andy Parratt (41) and Callum Earl (29) responded, but three-wicket stints by Neil Taylor (3-10) and young Patrick Holly (3-32) bowled Fawley out for 136.
Bottom of the pile Paultons ended a four-match losing streak with a desperately needed 53-run win at Hartley Wintney.
Scott Hills struck a maiden 101 to guide Paultons to 239 (Nathan Feltham 45) before James Holgate (5-56) toasted his first five-wicket haul to bowl HW out for 186 (Danny Plume 75).

ARE THE MANOR AS HARD AS OAKS ? IT'S CRUNCHTIME ...

Langley Manor flexed their muscles for Saturday’s potential Southern Premier League Division 3 title decider at Fair Oak with a comfortable 107-run victory over lowly Havant II at Knellers Lane.
Jack Budd (72) and Azeem Hamid, with a lively 58 (including two sixes and five fours) led the way as Langley posted a healthy 278-6.
Once Andrew Galliers (30) and Harry Gadd (29) were dismissed, Havant’s reply fell away and Hampshire Under-16 spinner Tommy Spencer weighed in with a 4-31 return, writes Mike Vimpany.
The Manor will go to Lapstone Park with a commanding 35-point lead. Victory over second placed Oaks will put them in a virtually unassailable position.
Fair Oak suffered early losses in the second v third duel with Basingstoke & North Hants II at May’s Bounty.
But Ed Kemp (58) and the reliable Asad Abbas (59), pictured above,  steadied the nerves of 24-2 and with contributions from Richard Featherstone (29) and Ross Stewart (21) Oaks pushed on.
A rapid 25 from KES student Greg McKenzie off 11 balls gave Oaks a competitive 242-8.
Basingstoke lost experienced duo Chris Froud and Steve Bucksey cheaply, but teenager Max Harsham (with six fours in his 36) remained a danger until he fell to Hampshire Under-17 left-arm spinner Charlie Gwynn (3-3-32), who also captured the key wicket of Brad Neal (23), who had punished Fair Oak earlier in the season.
At 127-7 it looked set for an early finish, but a late 55 partnership between Harry Smith (41) and Ash Neal took Basingstoke on to 188 before Assad Abbass (3-39) and Ross Stewart took the final wickets.
St Cross Symondians are hovering on Fair Oak’s shoulders and lie eight points behind in third place after comfortable six-wicket win over Hursley Park at the Green Jackets Ground.
Hursley, one of four sides under the threat of being relegated alongside Ryde, were indebted to skipper Nick Wheeler for their modest 139 all out.

TERRIFICALLY SPIRITED VENTNOR BATTLE TO WIRE

Joe Collings-Wells, pictured, inspired a three-wicket win over Ventnor which ensured Burridge remain in contention in the ECB Southern Premier League title race.
He hit an unbeaten 72 as third-placed Burridge overcame a wobble before beating Ventnor in a low key affair played against the backdrop of the sad pre-match news of the death of John Hilsum, their popular retired chairman and a legendary figure in Island cricket.  Mr Hilsum, 71, who was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours list, had been ill for many months.
Ventnor, still without a win, are all but mathematically relegated but they put up a terrifically spirited performance – one John Hilsum would have been proud of - rallying from 90-5 (James Cheek 35) to reach 200, mainly through Rob Snell’s unbeaten 64, aided by Alex Horton (24).
At 81-1 (Dan Hewitt 40), Burridge appeared to be strolling it, but Ventnor continued to chip away and took another six wickets before Collings-Wells, with ten fours in his 72, guided them to victory.

HAVANT END SOUTH WILTS HOODOO - NOW FAVOURITES

Havant have taken a giant step towards regaining the coveted ECB Southern Premier League championship.
Their trophy cabinet has laid bare since 2011 when South Wilts began their four-year silverware monopoly.
But all that is set to change after a comfortable five-wicket win over South Wilts made Havant firm favourites for the championship, writes Mike Vimpany.
Vice-captain Andy Gorvin described the win as “significant” but warned the title race could still easily go to the wire.
“We’ve got a 20-odd points lead going into the last four (games), but our last three are against Lymington, Hampshire Academy and then Burridge, so there’s a lot more for us to do yet,” he said.
South Wilts have been Havant’s nemesis in recent season’s – seldom have they beaten the Salisbury club in that time – but they well and truly removed the Indian Sign in the Havant Park sunshine.
They bowled South Wilts out for 149 and after a wobble, which saw four wickets fall for 19 runs, cruised to victory with 13 overs to spare.
South Wilts have batted indifferently for most of the summer and, after openers Jake Winter and Jack Mynott had gone cheaply, struggled to impose themselves on Havant’s spin friendly surface.
Teenager Ben Draper (19) helped South Wilts limp to 36-3, but only when James Hayward (26) and Joe Cranch (40) were at the crease did the four-time champions look as though they might post a competitive score.
Left-arm pair Thomas Vandslik (4-36) and Chris Morgan (3-25) took seven of the wickets as South Wilts just missed a second batting bonus point at 149 all out.
“It’s been the story of our season really – inconsistent batting,” sighed a disappointed SW captain James Hayward.
“It’s out of our hands now. All we can do now is try and win as many games as we can and see where that takes us.
“Our next two home games are against Burridge and Bashley (Rydal), so the run-in promises to be interesting.”
Peter Hopson (32) and Rob Gibson (17) gave Havant a sound launch pad, but both openers, plus Stu Ransley (26), Gorvin and Ben Walker were back in the pavilion as a middle-order wobble briefly threatened to undermine Havant’s day.
Chris Stone (46) and the ever reliable Richard Hindley (16) soon closed the door – and probably on South Wilts’ fading prospects of a fifth straight title.

HEAVY TROJANS DEFEAT PUTS CALMORE IN COMMAND

22/8/2016

Nathan Feltham blazed a quick-fire 46 (four sixes and five fours) at the top of the innings for Paultons, while Robbie Pike (49) and Josh Metcalfe (27) batted effectively in the middle-order as Paultons made 204 (Tom Pearce 3-48).
But the total was set to come under close scrutiny as Owain Phillips (35 not out) and Tom Cowley had South Wilts well placed when the weather set in.
Fourteen year old left-arm spinner Bailey Parratt, with a 5-11 return, was on the brink of bowling Fawley to a critical Southern Premier League Division 2 victory at Hartley Wintney when the weather turned sour.
Among Parratt’s victims was HW top scorer Danny Plume (47).
Three of his other victims were cleaned bowled and a fourth trapped leg before wicket.
The North Hampshire sider were in dire straits at 125-9 when heavy rain caused the match to be abandoned six overs before tea.
The washout was a blow to Fawley’s survival plans – the ‘no result’ leaving them second from bottom in the table with two games left.

TICHBORNE PARK COMING UP HARD ON THE RAILS

22/8/2016
