They redeemed themselves from an undistinguished session with the ball when Jovan Dhariwal (39) and Jimmy Khan (25) began to chase down Basingstoke’s 143-3.
But at 99-1 and only three overs left, CCF were distinct outsiders.
Needing 24 to win off the last over, Compton scored nine off three balls, but when Dhariwal hit a straight six the odds swung their way. Two runs off last ball tied the match.
Basingstoke had earlier played poorly against the New Forest and lost by five wickets, while Compton, still below their best, defended 121 to beat the Forest by 20 runs.
