Shanklin & Godshill are refurbishing the pavilion and clubhouse at their Westhill ground as a lasting memorial to club stalwart Dave Porter, who died suddenly while on holiday in Tenerife in January.
The first phase of the work, which involves the renovation of the showers and toilets, will be completed ahead of Shanklin’s new found entry into Hampshire League, County Division 2 cricket following this season’s promotion as County Division 3 South runners-up.
Shanklin are already well on course to raise approximately £20,000 to carry out the work – with £15,000 already pledged in donations, or ‘in-kind’ for materials or work commitment costs. The club still needs approximately £5,000 to cover the remaining project costs.
Brother Brian Porter said: “It had been Dave’s and my intention to refurbish the Gents Toilets for the club last winter and so, despite Dave no longer being with us, I was determined to carry on with the project in his memory. I have been emotionally humbled by the generous support I have received so far from family, friends and so many of Dave’s business colleagues, who have either offered to do the labour work ‘in-kind’ – or offered very generous discounts on materials needed.
                                                                             Special friend and person
“They have shown how special my brother Dave was, not only to his family, but to so many people on the Island’‘
‘I hope the project can be completed at no cost to the cricket club – a memorial to Dave, funded by the many people who regarded him as a very special friend and person.
“I am encouraging both club members of Shanklin & Godshill, and Dave’s many friends in Island cricket and in his wider business circle to support the memorial work.
"We've had one guy 81-years young coming along every day, besides others lending a hand, but we do need a carpenter."
Dave Porter was a true legend of Shanklin cricket, scoring some 30,000 runs during his long and successful association with Westhill, which he regarded as his second home.

COLLINGBOURNE celebrated their debut Hampshire League season in style, winning 11 of their 12 matches - Wilton were the only side to defeat them - to become Regional Division 2 North West winners. They had previously played in the Wiltshire League.
They dismissed their opponents in every match bar one, James Phillips' 27 wicket haul including three separate five-fers against Shrewton, Whiteparish and Redlynch & Hale.
Justin Whitfield marked his Collingbourne debut in remarkable fashion, coming in at five and smashing an unbeaten 108 in only 15 overs propelling his side to 285-5 (and an eventual 239-run win) against  Whiteparish, who made a meagre 46 in reply.  The other centurion was Ryan Fraser, with an unbeaten ton as Collingbourne racked up 303-5 against Redlynch & Hale.

Alton teenager Abhay Gonella carried off the MVP award as his adopted Sydney club Campbelltown-Cadnam snatched a dramatic win over University of New South Wales in the NSW Premiers Second Grade this weekend.
The 18-year old produced a key all-round performance, taking 4-31 off 16 overs as UNSW were dismissed for 227 by stumps on day one.
Gonella [pictured] then underpinned a nervous Campbelltown run chase, opening the batting and scoring a patient 60 which included only three boundaries.
But his knock proved critical as CC grabbed victory courtesy of an unbroken tenth-wicket stand.
Andover's Alex Ayers, meanwhile, had to be satisfied with his four victims behind the stumps on day one of Parramatta's 89-run defeat by Sydney.  Ayers was unable to add to his overnight score of three as his side was dismissed for 159.

Gosport Borough teenage tormentors Jacob Harris (above) and Jack Richards (right) are to spend the winter months fine tuning their skills in Australian Country Districts cricket.
Harris was arguably the stand-out all-rounder in County Division 1 this summer, hitting three centuries in his 564-run haul, in addition to taking 32 wickets.
Off-spinner Richards took 22 wickets to help Gosport finish third behind champions Parley and Hook & Newnham Basics II.

Shanklin cricketers past and present turned out in force in early September for a special Memorial Match for club stalwart Dave Porter, who died suddenly while on holiday in Tenerife in January.
An oak seat in his memory was unveiled outside the Westhill pavilion, where he spent some many happy hours.
Mr Porter, a long-term partner in the well established Whitehouse-Porter estate agency business in Sandown, was one of the island’s best known cricketers.
He made over 30,000 runs for the Westhill club and represented the Isle of Wight, many times as captain, throughout his long and successful career.
The burley left-hander, as he was affectionately known, was a true legend of Shanklin cricket, scoring over 30,000 runs during his 40-year association with the Westhill club.
A promising footballer in his younger days, Dave also played for and captained the Island representative teams, young and old, on numerous occasions.
                                                                                             Fine spell
Former Hampshire and Kent pace bowler David Griffiths, now with Basingstoke & North Hants, selected a number of former Shanklin players to represent his team in the Memorial Match for his step-father. He went on to top score with 28* in 194-9, supported by contributions of 26 each from Ryde’s Lawrence Tolfrey and Shanklin stalwart Chris Lammiman.
Shanklin XI, captained by Rob Moore, chased the total down to win by 4 wickets with 6 overs remaining. Veteran Dave Woods (36) and Moore (22) getting the Shanklin innings off to a solid start with a stand of 68 for the first wicket. Then, despite a fine spell of bowling by Griffiths (3-21), a 'man of the match' innings from Seb Egerton-Read saw Shanklin home.
The game in Dave Porter's memory drew a crowd of over 200, with family, friends and former teammates enjoying a game played in a competitive spirit befitting the Shanklin legend.
All the proceeds from the various fund raising events have done to Shanklin Cricket Club in support of an ongoing project to refurbish the existing Westhill shower room and toilets.
Shanklin Cricket Club would like to thank all the volunteers and members of Dave's family, especially Libby and David Griffiths, together with Dave's brother, Brian Porter, for organising a fantastic day. It was decided that the match would become an annual event in the Cricket Club diary.
